Scholarships and Monetary Awards Given on the Basis of Academic or Creative Achievement

Golumbic Scholarship

Students in the Department of Landscape Architecture are eligible for the Reuben and Gladys Golumbic Scholarship Award.  This award is presented annually to up to three students in the College of Arts and Architecture who have "...demonstrated superior design, humanistic, or performance records and who have proven their potential for significant contribution to the Arts and Humanities."  Nominations are made by the various faculties in the college and the awards are chosen by the members of the College of Arts and Architecture Scholarships and Awards Committee.

William E. and Julia Nelo Clark Excellence Scholarship

Consideration for this scholarship shall be given to all full-time undergraduate students enrolled or planning to enroll in the College of Arts and Architecture who have achieved superior academic records or who manifest promise of outstanding academic success. The criteria for choosing the recipient for this award are rather open but they clearly focus on academic success as opposed to creative achievement.

Donald Girouard Memorial Fund

Established in memory of landscape architecture associate professor, Donald W. Girouard (1972–90) to recognize Department of Landscape Architecture undergraduate students with proven academic abilities.

John Ormsbee Simonds Honor Award

Established to honor John Ormsbee Simonds by donations from alumni and the public to recognize Department of Landscape Architecture students who have demonstrated excellence in creativity.

Alma Heinz and August Louis Pohland Graduate Fellowship in the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture

Established by Joseph V. and Suzanne Pohland Paterno (’62 B.A. Arts and Letters) to honor Mrs. Paterno’s parents and to recognize graduate students enrolled in the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. Consideration will be given to full-time graduate students exhibiting academic excellence who have been admitted to Penn State as candidates for a graduate degree within the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture.

Golf Course Builders Association of America Foundation Award

This award will be given annually to honor and recognize outstanding achievement by an undergraduate student who has achieved third-year status, has a minimum GPA of 3.0, and who has demonstrated outstanding commitment and interest in a career in golf course construction, design, and/or related development.

Kenneth A. Schnorr Memorial Study Abroad Scholarship in Landscape Architecture

Established by John A. Schnorr, the purpose of this scholarship is to provide recognition and financial assistance to outstanding undergraduate students who are studying abroad as part of the mandatory study abroad component of the Landscape Architecture Department and who have a cumulate grade point average in the top fifty percent of all eligible recipients.

Russell O. Jones Trustee Scholarship

Established by alumnus Russell O. Jones to recognize undergraduate students enrolled in the College of Arts and Architecture at The Pennsylvania State University who have demonstrated a financial need, with first preference given to students enrolled in the landscape architecture major.

Established by Michael J. Kakos and Aimee Rusinko Kakos (’69 B.S. HHD) to recognize undergraduate students enrolled in the College of Arts and Architecture at The Pennsylvania State University who have demonstrated a financial need, with first preference given to students enrolled in the landscape architecture major.

Scholarship from Donald F. Hilderbrandt in honor of Professor Jim DeTuerk, in appreciation for his contributions to the department and to the profession.

This scholarship is intended to be given to a second, third or fourth-year student in good standing having financial need.  Don is clearly more interested in need than academic achievement.  If possible this scholarship should be awarded to a student who reflects Jim’s “expertise and values.”

The PA/DEL ASLA Chapter Scholarship

Awarded to landscape architecture student that graduated from a high school in PA/DEL Chapter, has successfully completed at least two years in undergraduate study, or one year in graduate study, be a member of ASLA Student Society, and have maintained at least a 3.0 GPA.  Applicants must submit an essay, graphic examples of their work, and a reference letter from a faculty member.

RGS Associates Scholarship

Established by Richard G. Stauffer (’70 B.S. L.Arch.) to provide recognition to undergraduate students in the Department of Landscape Architecture who have maintained a grade-point average of 2.75 or higher, and reside in Lancaster County, Pa.

Pashek, Lonnett and Buerkle Scholarship in Landscape Architecture

Established by Pashek Associates, James W. Pashek (‘74 B.S. L.Arch.) Nancy Lonnett Roman (’85 B.S. L.Arch.) and John Buerkle, Jr (’89 B.S. L.Arch) to provide recognition and financial assistance to outstanding graduate and undergraduate students in landscape architecture with documented financial need and who have demonstrated interest in environmental issues; who have achieved superior academic records or who manifest promise of outstanding academic success, and who have a demonstrated financial need.  First preference shall be given to students whose home residence is in Pennsylvania, Ohio, or West Virginia.

Semester Abroad Award

Consideration will be given to a student entering his/her fourth year who has high academic achievement and demonstrated financial need and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher (on a 4.0 scale).

Ann Pellow Wagner Memorial Scholarship

Presented in memory of the late Ann Pellow Wagner (‘84 B.S. L.Arch.) by her parents, Harold and Lois Pellow. Consideration shall be given to all full-time undergraduate students enrolled or planning to enroll in the Department of Landscape Architecture who have achieved outstanding academic records or who manifest promise of outstanding academic success, and who have a proven financial need.  First preference shall be given to women.

Humphry Repton Award for Creative Writing

The award was established by E. Lynn Miller, professor emeritus of Penn State, to recognize Department of Landscape Architecture students with creative writing abilities demonstrated through open juried competition.

H.S. Pennypacker Scholarship

Established in memory of the late H.S. Pennypacker (’38 B.S. L.Arch.) by his daughter, Eliza Pennypacker, professor and former department head of landscape architecture. Consideration will be given to a Department of Landscape Architecture undergraduate student who embraces the full range of educational challenges with a passion for learning, and who demonstrates the capacity for leadership. Application by submission of an essay on a specific topic.

Kenneth and Milton Berg Memorial Scholarship

Established by family and friends in memory of the late Kenneth and Milton Berg. The scholarship is intended to offset expenses for a landscape architecture student who secures a summer internship that will significantly broaden his/her educational experience. Application is by letter of application from which three finalists are chosen.  Those finalists must obtain a letter of commitment from the employing office verifying the summer position or experience.  Final determination is made by a selection committee.  Financial need may be considered.

Veronica Burns Lucas Travel Award in Landscape Architecture

Established by Agnes V. Burns in memory of the late Veronica Burns Lucas, former associate professor of landscape architecture in the College of Arts and Architecture. She was one of four Penn State faculty members who designed the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. This award is presented to a fifth-year student based on a juried presentation of a fall fifth-year studio project and a travel/inquiry proposal.  This award is intended to support travel during the spring semester or the summer following graduation.

The Charles Thorp Scholarship in the school of architecture and landscape architecture

In memory of Charles S. Thorp by Robert E. Fenza ('80 B.Ph. Inter-College) and friends to recognize undergraduate students majoring in either Architecture or Landscape Architecture in the College of Arts and Architecture at The Pennsylvania State University that demonstrates an exceptional interest in both departments by actively enrolling in classes in both majors beyond the respective requirements of each curriculum, and by partipating in other joint programs and competitions.
