Birkeland has worked with internationally renowned offices such as West 8, OLIN, and Ken Smith. She currently practices with her partner at their multi-disciplinary firm OP.AL in Brooklyn. She has worked on a wide range of projects including several design competitions for the National Parks Service, including the Presidio Parklands Competition in San Francisco, as well as the winning design entry for the Washington Monument Grounds at Sylvan Theater in Washington, D.C.

Honors + Awards

  • 2016 – Salem Massachusettes Arts Festival Grant
    Awarded $7,200 grant for art installation to be built in the historic Salem city center
  • 2015 – NYSCA Architecture + Design Grant,
    Awarded $10,000 grant by New York State for research on the roof-scape of the Gowanus watershed
  • 2015 – Competition Grant Winner - Field Constructs Design Build
    Awarded $6,500 grant for Pavilion selected by a national jury of architects to be built in Austin TX
