Eric Sutherland is the Stuckeman Practitioner Instructor for Design in the Department of Artchitecture. He has worked as an illustrator for the auto industry including work on assembly lines and in fabrication shops. His early training came from this technical, hands-on perspective and he has tried to stay close to this mindset throughout his career. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture from the University of Michigan and a Master of Architecture degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. He has worked for 12 years in international architectural offices on projects in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. In professional practice he has been able to focus on Asian and Chinese projects with a special interest in academic buildings and environments for learning.

Recently he has been the designer in charge of completing the Run Run Shaw Creative Media Center, at the City University of Hong Kong, which received a Hong Kong Institute of Architects Merit Award in 2012. He was also the designer in charge of the architectural development of the Zhang Zhidong and Modern Industry Museum, in Wuhan, China.

Eric was also a teacher at the Architecture Department of SUNY at Buffalo. During his four years there he worked on campus projects that were completed with students as part of a hands-on architecture curriculum. One of the projects, designed with Kent Kleinman, won a Progressive architecture award in 2000.
