Cape Town's recent urban design decisions and dynamics, from the Stadium in Greenpoint to the redevelopment of the harbor and inner core, reflect global trends for "world-class cities" and very high aspirations for the role of "design" in shaping their identity, public spaces, and urban form. Design Urbanism will look at how this conscious policy -- including winning the bid to be World Design Capital 2014 -- manifests itself in shaping a place that has both world-class city aspirations and challenges, addressing the response of "design" and its role in an emerging urbanism that is both international and connected to the complex culture of the city. This talk will draw on recent scholarship, reflect on future urban scenarios, and its relevance to urban design practice beyond South Africa.

Ray Gastil is a Visiting Professor and Chair in Design Innovation for theStuckeman School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture.
