Visualization takes on many forms with the current trend being in the use of different types of virtual reality (VR). The use of VR technology enables users to experience information (whether as designs or complex simulated scenarios) through multiple modalities. This research area has two main focuses: development and user testing.

Development focuses on key skills such as programming, 3D modeling, lighting/texturing, as well as learning the features for new technology. Development is where stimuli are created and prepared for research endeavors. User testing is the other main focus and is used to test suitability of new technology, techniques for development, and stimuli developed.

User testing is where researchers can inform development and design of areas that may be deficient in achieving intended goals.
