Understanding the urban structure of informal settlements: combining 3D scanning techniques and shape grammars

The research is focused on understanding the urban structure of Brazilian informal settlements, using two computational tools that are already being applied to architecture and urbanism, namely, 3D scanning to characterize existing structures, and shape grammar to describe the bottom-up, natural growth of informal settlements. The hope is that by understanding the formal structure of informal settlements it will be possible define guidelines for their requalification, find compositional rules that help to explain their growing process, and ultimately, develop guidelines for the design of planned settlements in similar topographic conditions.
