Three alumnae to be honored with alumni society awards

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Three alumnae of the Stuckeman School have been named recipients of the 2018 Alumni Award by the College of Arts and Architecture Alumni Society and will be recognized at a ceremony on Nov. 2 at 4 p.m. in the Palmer Lipcon Auditorium. 

Kelly Gutshall, who received her B.S. in Landscape Architecture in 1984, is the president of LandStudies, Inc., an ecological restoration and design firm providing engineering, construction and maintenance services throughout Pennsylvania and Maryland. As a landscape architect, Gutshall has championed the firm’s science-based approach to planning and design. During her 34-year career, she has gained extensive knowledge and experience in sustainable-site planning, open-space planning, watershed planning, creating and managing ecologically diverse plant communities, alternative storm water management and restoration design.

Marilia Rodrigues graduated from Penn State in 2002 with a B.Arch. degree and is now a principal at KieranTimberlake,an internationally-recognized architecture firm noted for its commitment to research, innovation and invention. She has been with the firm for 16 years and brings multiple voices and talents together to achieve award-winning designs with great technical aspirations. Currently Rodrigues is overseeing projects that transform the east end of campus at the Washington University in St. Louis.

Karin Sastrom, a 2001 graduate with a B.S. in Graphic Design/Photography, is the design director at the Metropolitan Opera, where she oversees and creates the concepts and designs of all print and digital materials to promote the more than 25 operas held each season. Prior to the Metropolitan Opera, Sastrom was design director at The O Group, an independent branding and creative agency headquartered in New York, where she led the design and execution of digital and print collateral.
