This course provides an in-depth introduction to shape grammars and their applications in different areas of design. Shape grammars are presented as a framework that supports an algorithmic approach to design. The course addresses both theoretical and practical aspects of shape grammars with the goal of providing students with an understanding of the syntactic and semantic principles of form description and generation. The emphasis is on the use of shape grammars for understanding existing design styles as much as for exploring new languages of design. Students will be exposed to the foundations of the theory and to its most recent developments and applications in architecture and landscape architecture, but also in urban design, engineering and the arts. Weekly readings or hands-on exercises developed in class will lead to a final assignment that might be an essay or a practical application.
