Portrait of Paul Sayre
Penn State Landscape Architecture

Paul Sayre joined the landscape architecture faculty at Penn State in the fall of 2019 following several years of professional practice in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, North Carolina, metropolitan area, where he specialized in continuing care retirement community (CCRC) design, plant systems, and plant-community-based planting design in the tradition of Richard Hanson, Fredrich Stahl, and John Philip Grime.

Sayre is both a landscape architect and a professional composer/pianist. Additionally, he pursues teaching, horticulture, and woodworking and is keenly interested in ecology, conservation, renewable energy, and social equity. Sayre’s primary research interests lie in: exploring the role of landscape architecture within the context of complex global environmental crises; plant systems and matrix plant design; exploring musical applications in architectural pedagogy to enhance aesthetic, cultural, stylistic, and historical awareness; and the polyphonic vocal style of the 16th century, particularly in regard to the transition from modality to tonality.
