Lecture: Chaz Maviyane-Davies

Wednesday, March 30, 2016 - 6:00pm to 8:00pm
Stuckeman Jury Space

On Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at 6:00 p.m., internationally acclaimed graphic designer Chaz Maviyane-Davies will deliver a talk titled, "Creative Defiance" as part of the Stuckeman School lecture series. The lecture will be followed by a gallery reception for Maviyane-Davies' concluding exhibit in the Stuckeman School's Rouse Gallery . Both events are free and open to the public.

Chaz Maviyane-Davies has been described by the UK's Design magazine as “the guerrilla of graphic design.” For more than three decades the award-winning, controversial designer's powerful work has taken on issues of consumerism, health, politics, social responsibility, the environment, and human rights. He has studied (MA, Central School of Art and Design, London) and worked in Britain, Japan, Malaysia, the United States, and Zimbabwe, his country of origin. From 1983 until recently he ran the renowned design studio – The Maviyane-Project – in Harare, Zimbabwe.

Due to adverse political conditions in his homeland and the confrontational nature of his work, Maviyane-Davies moved to the United States in 2001, where he is currently a professor of design at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. As well as being published in numerous books, international magazines, and newspapers, his work has been exhibited extensively and is included in several permanent collections at various galleries. In 2009, he was conferred an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell.

His recently published book, A World of Questions: 120 Posters on the Human Condition, is now available exclusively online at or
